Brief History of the College

1925 – Fu Jen Catholic University is established in Beijing, comprised of the Colleges of Literature, Science, and Education.
1939 – Sister Urbania founds the Department of Home Economics within the College of Education. The Department accepts only female students.
1948 – Department of Home Economics transfers to the College of Science.
1949 – Department of Home Economics closes.
1961 – Fu Jen Catholic University is re-established in Taiwan.
1963 – Under the auspices of Sister Urbania, the Department of Home Economics and Nutrition is established within the College of Science.
1970 – Department of Textiles and Clothing grows out of the Department of Home Economics and Nutrition, and is established within the College of Science. The first such program of its kind in Taiwan, Sister Maryta Laumann, S.Sp.S, serves as founding director.
1971 – Nutrition Division separates from the Department of Home Economics and Nutrition, merging with the Food Science Division to form the Department of Food and Nutritional Science within the College of Science. The Department of Home Economics and Nutrition is renamed the Department of Home Economics.
1983 – Department of Nutrition establishes a master’s program.
1986 – Department of Home Economics is renamed the Department of Applied Science of Living.
1991 – Department of Textiles and Clothing establishes a master’s program.
1994 – Department of Textiles and Clothing divides into three modules: Textile Design, Fashion Design, and Textiles and Fashion Marketing.
1994 – Department of Applied Science of Living, the Department of Food and Nutritional Science, and the Department of Textiles and Clothing move out of the College of Science and join to create the College of Human Ecology — the first such college in all of Taiwan.
Professor John Ning-Yuean Lee serves as the founding dean of the College.
1995 – Department of Food and Nutritional Science establishes Taiwan’s first Ph.D. Program in Nutritional Science.
1997 – Department of Textiles and Clothing adds two-year program in Fashion Design.
2000 – Professor John Ning-Yuean Lee is promoted to position of University President, Shau-Yen Huang takes over as dean. The Department of Textiles and Fashion establishes an in-service master’s program.
2001 – Department of Applied Science of Living establishes a master’s program.
2002 – Department of Applied Science of Living divides into the Department of Child and Family Studies and the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management. The Graduate Program of Museum Studies is established.
2006 – Guoo-Shyng Wang becomes the third dean at the College. The Department of Food and Nutritional Science divides into the Department of Nutritional Science and the Department of Food Science. The Graduate Institute of Nutrition and Food Science establishes a PhD Program in Food Science. The Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management establishes both an in-service master’s program as well as a BA program at the School of Continuing Education. The two-year Fashion Design program amalgamates with the Department of Textiles and Fashion.
2010 – PhD Program in Food and Nutritional Science becomes an independent program.
2012 – Bin-Huei Chen becomes the fourth dean of the College. The MA Program in Brand and Fashion Management launches, taught exclusively in English.
2015 – Sulee Tsai takes over as the fifth dean.
2017 – Chih-Ching Teng becomes the sixth dean. On August 1, 2017, the Department of Textiles and Fashion, Graduate Program in Museum Studies, and MA Program in Brand and Fashion Management join to create the College of Textiles and Clothing.
